However, it’s worth bearing in mind that the UK can more than hold its own when it comes to winter mini breaks. Aside from saving you precious time queuing in airports, vacations in the UK can save you a heap of money!

This got us wondering - how many iconic winter getaways and activities can be effectively recreated without having to leave the UK? To discover what we found, simply explore our interactive map.

Wave goodbye to those winter blues...

Can’t wait to take the kids to visit Father Christmas this festive season? Instead of making the costly journey to Finland, why not enjoy a long weekend at Lapland UK near Ascot - Santa’s UK-based home? Or if you and your partner fancy a romantic week of skiing, head to the beautiful slopes of Scotland and save yourself a small fortune on the flights and resort passes required for authentic Alpine skiing. And for that adrenaline junkie in you, have you ever considered heading to the surfers’ paradise of Cornwall for a spot of winter surfing over a trip to Portugal?

Whether you're basking in the yuletide cheer of the famous Christmas market in Bath rather than travelling to Cologne, or experiencing the magic of outdoor ice skating with a mince pie and mulled wine at Hampton Court Palace, you might be surprised to learn that our unique little nation has a lot to offer when it comes to winter holiday destinations.

For the purposes of our campaign, we have calculated the cost of travel to each location using Manchester as a starting point. UK travel costs have been generated through an online fuel calculator with an average petrol-powered family car in mind. The costs of travelling abroad have been calculated using a price comparison website to find the cheapest flights for a family of four (two adults and two children), between the dates of 25 November and 2 December 2019.
