Great mountain biking events for kids

Mountain biking is a great activity
for all the family and an increasing range of MTB events now offer something
for juniors, as well as the adults. This time of year is also perfect for enjoying the fun
– and mud – of off-road riding.

Big
Tree Campervans Tayside & Fife Regional Youth MTB Series 2013

Various dates and venues in Scotland

A new series of events for younger
mountain bikers is launching in Scotland this autumn. The Big Tree Campervans Tayside
& Fife Regional Youth MTB Series 2013
is open for eight to 16-year-old
riders. (So kids you can leave the grown-ups on the sidelines!)

Run by Tayside and Fife cycling
clubs, the events are also supported by Scottish Cycling and Developing
Mountain Biking in Scotland. The five races from September to November will
give young riders the chance to try downhill riding, XC racing and endurance
mountain biking.

Graeme McLean, project manager of
Developing Mountain Biking in Scotland, said: “There is a growing mountain bike
scene in Tayside & Fife. The race series will provide children and
young people with a local, fun and accessible entry into the sport of mountain
biking.”

The series events are as follows:

22nd September –
Dirt Crit at Middleden, Kirkcaldy
29th September – Dirt Crit at Dundee, Templeton
Woods
19th October – Endurance Round at Hairy Coo,
Comrie Croft
10th November – Mini-DH at Kinnoull Hill, Perth
17th November – Dirt Crit at Lochore Meadows,
Fife

The Cross Country
Mountain Bike Race
, run to British Cycling Mountain Biking Specific
Regulations, offers the exciting events of Cross Country Olympic (XCO). A
single lap measures 5km. There are categories of racers for juvenile/youth (12
to 16 year olds), who will race one lap, and junior (17-18yos)
and Senior (19yo +) who will race for a minimum of 1hr 30 minutes.

Nuclear
Blast 2013

The Nuclear
Blast
comprises an exciting Mountain Bike Enduro event suitable for all
standards of rider. The event offers a 2 or 4 hour enduro race or a 1 hour
open race for riders aged 10-plus. Each lap is approximately 4 miles

Banjo Cycle Rampage Series 2013

September 22

Hammonds Farm,
Checkendon, Nr Reading, Oxon,

The Rampage offers fast and furious, short
course mountain bike racing at the classic Checkendon course. These races are
ideal for beginners looking to get their first taste of racing and elites keen
to hone those sprinting skills. There will be races for kids, youths and seniors.

Thornbidge Bike Fest 2013

September 13 to 15

Derbyshire

The Thornbridge Bike Fest
offers a host of great events and workshops for all the family. There will be bike skills workshops, bike maintenance (beginners and intermediate), demos, self-led rides and guided rides, cycle and abseil sessions and a MTB challenge
course.

You will also be able to enjoy on-site activities
such as high ropes, a zip wire, under 10s mini adventure and bushcraft skills.

BucksMTB Family Fun Day

The
BucksMTB
Family Fun Day
offers something for all with a focus on mountain biking for
families. The main event is an orienteering challenge with families racing to
reach as many checkpoints as possible within a given time period.

Good
family team work and group tactics will all be put to the test, but so will
each individual in the family. It'll also be a great way to learn new biking
skills.

Qualified
BucksMTB trail leaders will be providing led rides through Wendover Woods
during the event and there will be a ShoreTrax portable MTB course set up for
those who fancy having a go at something a little different.
