“Do you believe in fairies?” Somebody asked me once.
And at the time, I gave them the same answer I always used to give when I wasn't sure about something…
“I will believe it when I see it” I said.
Well, that was many years ago now and how things have changed…
The Littles of Arnside Knott
‘Arnside Knott is a very special place tucked away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. It is particularly tricky to find as it is surrounded by racing tides, dense forests and often lies in the shadows of the greatest mountains of England. It is a very magical place indeed…enchanted some might say.
I had always heard people talking about little folks like fairies and pixies but didn’t really believe in them and had certainly never seen any. Then one day, right at the very top of Arnside Knott an extremely special little being caught my eye…’

What are Tale Trails?
Tale Trails are family walks based around a fun story and a hand-drawn map. Kids can follow their own colourful map and use the story to spot things and search for clues along the trail.
The new Regatta Tale Trail centres around Arnside Knott on the Lancashire/Cumbria border which has been designated as an area of outstanding natural beauty and it is easy to see why.
The Knott itself is a limestone hill with a unique mixture of grasslands, mixed woodlands and secret coves along its shoreline. It attracts a variety of amazing wildlife (as well as fairies) and is especially renowned for its butterflies and rare Alpine plants. There are outstanding views from the summit towards the Lake District Mountains and Morecambe Bay; some of the best I have ever seen in fact and I have worked and researched in the outdoors for a long time!
It really is incredible that you are only 15 minutes drive from the M6 as on a sunny day it feels like an island paradise. If you time it right you might even catch a glimpse of the famous bore tide that races in along the estuary; there is even a siren that goes off to warn you of its approach…it really is that fast!
This new 7km trail offers a great variety of walks from coastal paths to woodland glades and is suitable for all ages, as it combines a variety of fun loops. Every corner is filled with intrigue and surprise, you really feel like you could be anywhere in the world at times! I love exploring the hidden coves for fossils and meandering around the high pine trees searching for the next surprise view.
Arnside Knott certainly has a very magical feel to it and a friend of mine who lived here for many years is convinced fairies flutter around these woodlands; she has even written a book about it! This is one of the many reasons why we chose this location for the new Regatta Tale Trail and we hope you doing enjoy it as much as we did creating it for you.
