The UK’s leading women-only cycle series, Cycletta, is calling for as many riders as possible to sign up to one of their six events being staged across the country.
The non-competitive cycling series offers a choice of Novice, Classic and Challenge distances – 20km, 40km and 100km – at each event. This year is the first time that the 100km route has been included after demand from women cyclists looking for a female-only long-distance sportive.
This means there is a cycling challenge for all abilities, and one that will feel as achievable or as challenging as you want.
In 2014, Cycletta has also joined forces with Macmillan Cancer Support as the title partner of the series.
The rise of women cyclists
In just three years since the launch of Cycletta, the series has seen a 130 per cent growth in participation, which supports evidence of the rise in women cyclists in general in the UK. In 2013, some 4,000 women got on their bikes to take part in the Cycletta events.
The events are all held at family friendly venues with plenty on offer for riders and their families and friends. Every Macmillan Cycletta route winds through beautiful surroundings on quiet, safe and well-managed roads.
The Novice distance will be a manageable 20km route, which is ideal for beginners and is a similar challenge to running 5km.
The Classic distance of 40km is perfect for anyone with a little more confidence on their bike.
The Challenge distance is aimed at more experienced riders, who are seeking a slightly sterner test or for those in training for longer sportives.
Macmillan Cycletta is open to girls as young as 12 when accompanied by an adult.
And remember that you do not need to wear tight Lycra and own the most expensive cycling kit to enjoy a bike ride. Comfortable sports and outdoor clothing, including many items that can be bought from Regatta women's outdoor clothing ranges, will be perfect.
Each event will feature a host of thoughtful highlights, such as regular and well-stocked treat stops, goodie bags, friendly and knowledgeable marshals and buzzing event villages.
At Macmillan Cycletta events the younger kids will also be able to get active at the Scootathlon, which takes place on event day.
The Scootathlon is a mini, fun triathlon for children aged four to eight, who will scoot (150m), bike (600m) and run (200m). Girls and boys will race together in various age categories, completing the three disciplines.
Olympic champion Victoria Pendleton is the Cycletta ambassador. She says: “It has been such a pleasure to be involved with Macmillan Cycletta so far. I’m proud to have been a part of it since the beginning and I am delighted to see more and more women continue to up cycling.”
Cycling Programme Manager at Macmillan Cancer Support, Liz Hemming, said: “Macmillan Cycletta is really exciting for us as the series continues to grow and we look forward to seeing more women at the events.
“Macmillan Cycletta is a great way for female cyclists nationwide to raise money to help people affected by cancer through taking on a cycling challenge. The new title of Macmillan Cycletta reflects our commitment to encouraging more women to get on their bikes, and use their challenge to help others”.
