Britain's Best Picnic Spots

Now that the weather is finally getting warmer, we can make the most of the beautiful green spaces we have here in the UK. Camping trips, trying out new outdoor hobbies, there's plenty to do, but what better way is there to enjoy the sunny weather than with a traditional picnic, whether it's with your own family, your friends, or even a romantic picnic with your partner.

We've highlighted some of our favourite picnic locations so you can host the perfect picnic no matter where in Britain you may be. Check out our handy map below to discover some picnic spots near you.

Britain's Best Picnic Locations

Tatton Park, Knutsford, Cheshire

Tatton Park situated in Knutsford is a national trust property with over 1,000 acres of land. This historic estate has a number of things to do for all the family, from the quaint tea room to visiting the mansion and exploring the deer park there's something for everyone. Please be aware at the moment the Gardens and Farm are only available to visit when pre-booked.

The stunning landscape makes Tatton Park the perfect place for a picnic. If you don't fancy making a picnic yourself then they have got you covered with a freshly made, ready-to-go picnic available to purchase so you don't have to worry about getting your picnic food together. Please remember to book in advance.

Getting Here: Tatton Park is accessible by a number of different transport links, with Knutsford Railway Station being half a mile away from the park.

You will need to use postcode: WA16 6SG in your sat nav, car parking is available at a charge of £8.

Cannock Chase Forest, Staffordshire

Located in Rugeley, Cannock Chase Forest is a great day out for the whole family, with lots of activities to choose from including a play area, Go Ape, walking trails, a cycling trail and even a dog activity trail so your furry friends can have a great time.

This location is the perfect place for a picnic with a large open area within the Pine Forest set up specifically for picnics and BBQ's (although these are not allowed at the moment due to Covid 19 regulations). You can even pop to the café for any extra refreshments you need. To find the picnic area, look out for Ladhill trail, this will bring you the Pingle Slade picnic area.

Getting Here: Cannock Chase is open from 7:30am to 9:00pm during the summer months and is accessible by train with both Rugeley Trent Valley and Rugeley Town approximately 2 miles away.

In the sat nav you will need postcode: WS15 2UQ, car parking is available with a small charge depending on how many hours you choose to stay.

Kew Gardens, London

Kew Gardens is a beautiful, botanical garden with several attractions inside from their rock garden to their Japanese theme garden there is so much to explore.

At the moment you have to book tickets in advance to get into Kew Gardens.

This stunning location is the perfect spot for your picnic with beautiful scenery throughout the garden you will find yourself spoilt for choice when it comes to choosing where to sit. You'll also find a number of different eateries, from the Victoria Gate Café selling ideal picnic snacks, to the Orangery serving toasties, soups and much more!

Getting Here: Kew Gardens is accessible by plenty of transport links and by car. When getting here by car please use postcode: TW9 3AF, parking costs £7 per day. By tube, Kew Gardens station is a short walk to the gardens or by train you can reach Kew Bridge station. For full details on how to get here please visit the Kew Gardens website.

Regents Park & Primrose Hill, London

Regents park (named after the Prince Regent) is a large park area with a number of open spaces, play areas and gardens. Regents Park is also host to a number of eateries, from The Regents Bar & Kitchen, The Broad Walk Café to the Espresso Bar you really are spoilt for choice.

Primrose Hill is North of Regents Park and is known for its stunning views across the whole of London at 63 meters above sea level, there are 6 different viewpoints at the top of the hill. These stunning views make the perfect place to sit and enjoy your picnic. Please be aware this does take a good walk from Regents park.

Getting Here: Both of these areas are easily accessible by public transport, you can visit by tube with the nearest tube station being Regent's Park on the Bakerloo line. For more information how to get here please visit the Royal Parks Website.

Crook O'Lune, Lancaster

Crook O'Lune is based in the North of Lancashire in Halton, this picnic spot is based on the horseshoe bend in the River Lune, offering views of the Lune Valley making this an excellent picnic spot. There are several different walks you can also enjoy in the surrounding area, some of these do require steep steps so we advise you do your research or come equipped with some walking boots. There are refreshments available at Woodies Café situated in the car park.

Getting Here: If you're travelling by car, you will need to put the following details into your sat nav: Crook O' Lune, Lancashire, LA2 9NB. There is a car park available with a small charge.

Chatsworth House, Derbyshire

Chatsworth house offers a great day out for all the family, there's a farmyard full of animals to discover such as ponies and lambs, along with a beautiful 105-acre garden, the house itself, shops, and eateries. Please be aware guests must book tickets online and arrive within their designated timeslot.

Having a picnic has never been so easy, you can order your picnic three months in advance until 2 pm the day before your visit, these can then be collected on the day of your visit within your selected timeslot.

Getting Here:

When getting here by car you will need the following postcode: DE45 1PP, this will take you to the house car park, located nearby the house, garden, stables, and farmyard. There is also another car park situated slightly further away should the other car park be full. Both car parks cost £5, which you can find more information about on the Chatsworth website.

Brighton Beach

Brighton Beach is a certified Blue Flag Beach known for its beautiful landscape and pier. There are tons of family friendly activities to take part in around the area, with numerous water sports to try, arcade games at the pier, and many shops and restaurants in the nearby vicinity.

This beach makes the perfect location to host your picnic, you can relax as you look out to the stunning views of the sea whilst feeling the sand between your toes. If sitting on the beach is not for you then there are a number of grass areas surrounding the beach where you can pop down your picnic blanket!

Getting Here: If arriving by car you will need postcode: BN2 1TW, there is some seafront parking available near the beach that is available on a pay and display basis but please be aware that these do become very busy.

If you are arriving by train you will need to head to Brighton train station where it will only take approximately ten minutes to reach the beach.
