Regatta Supports the Bangladesh Protibondhi Foundation (BPF)
| The Bangladesh Protibondhi Foundation (BPF) was established in 1984 initially to serve children who were intellectually disabled and children with cerebral palsy. They now assist numerous levels of disabled children as well as non-disabled children. "Protibondhi" means early intervention. This is the key element to their cause. Their services are aimed at adding a long-lasting and meaningful influence to children's lives early on, thus increasing their health, opportunities and quality of life as they mature. Raising awareness of the needs of these children and issues they and their families face is the first step in any remedial action. What they do: IDENTIFICATION AND INTERVENTION - Community Based Rehabilitation centres provide diagnostic assessment of children at risk, and the provision of nutritional advice, counselling services, behaviour modification training, appropriate drug therapy, home based services and referrals to specialists. SCHOOLING - After screening and diagnosis children are placed in appropriate classes according to their age levels and capabilities. Children receive education on an academic level as well as life skills COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION AND INCOME GENERATION - Stimulating involvement of the communities within which they operate and providing support to families in small-scale income generating projects such as poultry and cattle-raising, which in turn improves their living conditions. | ![]() |
| NETWORKING AND DIALOGUE - Networking with mainstream schoolteachers, management committees and community leaders helps create greater opportunities for enrolment of children with disabilities into mainstream schools. SHELTERED WORKSHOP - Students that have graduated from special schools when 18 may be employed in the sheltered workshop and paid monthly wages, promoting experience for workers in the open labour job market and to create income-generating projects from which they benefit. Regatta’s Sponsors Savar School As Regatta uses several factories in Bangladesh, the welfare of the people is very important to us. As part of our social responsibility we want to give something back to the community and working closely with such a respected organisation like the BPF, we know that any donations we make will be appropriately used. Regatta currently donates money in order to help run the Savar school, found in the area Dhaka, where majority of our factories are I Bangladesh are found. The school was originally set up by the BPF and the money Regatta has donated has helped go towards building and expand the school so more children can be educated. Trisha Winskell, Regatta Buying Officer Manger comments: "It is a charity that I am very proud that Regatta is involved with. Humbling to see local Bangladesh people helping themselves to provide a better education for the children of Bangladesh. Such a worthwhile cause that gives back to the community in a unique & positive way" The pictures show a recent visit to school by Trisha and Regatta Managing Director Keith Black, so they could see how the money had been spent, but were also treated to some great entertainment from children themselves! | |
Regatta Walking Bus Scheme Marches On!
| As part of our social responsibility programme Regatta officially launched a walking bus scheme just over a year ago. With initial guidelines to help set up a bus available on the web and the offer of free vests for kids and volunteers and walking bus goodies, it enables schools to set up their own walking buses easily and cost effectively.
With now over 65 Regatta walking bus schemes in operation now across the UK and over 1600 vests supplied, it’s safe to say the scheme has really taken off, with more school joining the scheme every week! | ![]() |
| A ‘Walking Bus’ encourages children to walk to and from school safely, meeting at designated bus stops, all with the help of adult volunteers. By walking to and from school on a regular basis, children become more aware of road safety procedures, something that is difficult to learn in the classroom. The scheme is extremely popular as it helps to encourage parents to leave their car at home, which in turn helps to ease congestion, save money on high rising petrol costs and provides a great form of exercise. Graham Rickard, Marketing Director for Regatta comments: “We are delighted to be supporting schools with walking bus schemes and the package we offer will help generate interest amongst the kids and adults alike. Walking buses are one way to help protect children from road danger and they are also practical and healthy alternatives to using cars on school runs. It’s a great start in getting kids to enjoy the outdoors and understand what the advantages of physical exercise can bring, especially at the beginning of a day.’’ Attached are some great images of some Regatta walking buses in action!
